About Us
NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney is a Primary Care Trust (PCT), set up on October 1st 2006, serving a population of around 230,000 people.
In 2011 we joined with NHS Norfolk to form a “PCT Cluster”. Whilst each PCT remains a separate statutory body, we have one team of staff, one management team and one Board of Directors.
Our PCT Cluster is known as NHS Norfolk and Waveney; we serve just under a million people and have a combined budget in excess of £1.64 billion.
Our main role is to commission health care - planning which NHS services are appropriate for our area and ensuring they are available to patients. This means agreeing contracts with GPs, dentists, pharmacists, opticians, hospitals, community health and mental health trusts and also voluntary or independent organisations.
From April 2013, PCTs will be replaced by locally-focused Clinical Commissioning Groups, led by doctors and nurses.
Of course, many people only come into contact with the NHS when they need to see a GP, nurse, dentist, optician or pharmacist.
However many patients also need care in hospital or from a community clinician. The main NHS organisations in our area are:
East Coast Community Healthcare, which runs local community hospitals and provides many other community services
